El nombre electrocardiograma está compuesto por electro (actividad eléctrica), cardio (corazón en griego) y grama, que en griego significa escritura. En el siglo XIX se puso de manifiesto que el corazón generaba electricidad. La actividad eléctrica generadora del latido cardiaco fue descubierta por Kolliker y Mueller en 1856.
